Puerto Rican Summer Survival - Stay Cool with Food, Fun and the Beach

If you plan to travel to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico during the summer, you may find yourself wondering just how the locals manage to stay cool amidst the heat. When summer arrives in Puerto Rico, the island truly comes alive with an array of vibrant traditions, deliciously refreshing treats, and sun-soaked weekends spent at the beach. Here's a glimpse into how we embrace the heat and make the most of the long, hot summer months while enjoying everything this tropical paradise has to offer.

A couple of traditional activities worth experiencing while on the island are a fun, highly energetic chinchorreo and local festivals.

A chinchorreo is a very popular tradition that involves hopping from one roadside eatery to another, sampling an array of flavorful local dishes while thoroughly enjoying the company of friends and family. It is not just a meal, but a social and cultural experience that allows you to savor the rich and diverse world of Puerto Rican cuisine and drinks in a convivial atmosphere.

Fiestas Patronales are lively town festivals, held in honor of local saints, celebrate with colorful parades, enchanting music, spirited dancing, and an abundance of traditional foods. They provide an engaging way to immerse yourself in Puerto Rican culture and witness the vibrant community spirit that fills the air during these festive occasions. I attended my first San Sebastián fest earlier this year in San Juan. It was amazing and would highly recommend it.

Refreshing summer treats can help cool the body down, even on the hottest days. One of my favorite summer treats is a piragua. A piragua is a colorful shaved ice treat that vendors, known as piragüeros, sell in bustling urban areas or at beachside stands. These cones of ice are generously doused with a variety of tropical syrups, including flavors like guava, passion fruit, and zesty lemon, capturing the essence of summertime bliss.

Equally irresistible is the iconic piña colada, a cocktail that epitomizes the flavors of Puerto Rico. This creamy concoction of rum (Puerto Rican of course), coconut cream, and sweet pineapple juice is a must-try, whether you're lounging at a beach bar or crafting it at home for a touch of island magic.

Then there’s the refreshing goodness of coconut water served in its shell, nature’s own hydration source. Found at the beach and in local markets, its subtly sweet taste and cooling properties make it an excellent choice for replenishing your body after soaking up the sun. Don´t forget to eat the coconut pulp for a complete experience.

With these delightful options, your summer will be both refreshing and delicious.

And speaking of beaches, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are right here in Puerto Rico. A few of my favorites are Flamenco Beach, Rincon, and Laguna del Condado.

Flamenco Beach, Culebra is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and soft white sand, Flamenco Beach is often listed among the world's top beaches. It's an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and soaking up the sun.

Rincón has been dubbed the "Caribbean's Hawaii," Rincón is a haven for surfers and beach lovers alike. Its laid-back atmosphere and stunning sunsets make it a perfect weekend getaway.

Laguna del Condado is for anyone staying in San Juan or close to the city. This serene lagoon offers opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding. It's a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

Don´t forget the sunscreen, a cooler filled with your drink of choice and light snacks, and a beach towel.

Whether you're a local resident or planning a wonderful visit, Puerto Rico offers countless ways to stay cool and truly enjoy the summer months. From captivating beach trips to vibrant cultural festivities, the island's warm hospitality and rich traditions make every summer moment an unforgettable memory.
