Barrio Queen: For The Love of Tequila

May, 2023. After a delightful afternoon exploring the renowned winery tasting rooms in the Scottsdale, my family and I found ourselves craving Mexican food. We stumbled upon Barrio Queen, a lively Mexican restaurant nestled in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. Little did I know, this unassuming stop would turn into one of the most memorable meals of my trip.

A Welcoming Ambiance

As we approached Barrio Queen, the vibrant colors and festive atmosphere immediately caught our attention. The restaurant's exterior is adorned with bright blue umbrellas and rustic charm, inviting us to step inside. Upon entering, we were greeted by a warm and bustling interior, featuring colorful Day of the Dead murals and an open kitchen that added to the lively ambiance. The space was filled with a tantalizing aroma of sizzling fajitas. I was definitely hungry and there for the food.

A Margarita Flight to Remember

I was just eager to unwind a little after our last winery tasting room of the day and have some food. Our waiter commented that Barrio Queen's extensive tequila list boasts over 400 selections, making it a haven for tequila enthusiasts. I was starting to think we were there not by chance but because my brother knew about this place. He loves tequila just a little bit. In addition to their impressive collection, they offer a variety of signature margaritas. Therefore, I decided on indulging in a flight of margaritas. Because, why not?! I’ll be honest, I have no idea what the flight was called or which trio I tried. But I can tell you they were all phenomenal.

Tableside Guacamole: A Sensory Experience

No visit to Barrio Queen is complete without experiencing their tableside guacamole. Our waiter arrived with a cart laden with fresh ingredients: ripe avocados, diced tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, lime, and a medley of spices. With a few deft strokes of the molcajete, our guacamole was transformed into a creamy, flavorful dip. The addition of pomegranate seeds added a surprising burst of sweetness, elevating the dish to new heights. Paired with warm, house-made tortilla chips, it was the perfect appetizer and exactly what I was looking for.

Culinary Delight:

Barrio Queen's menu is a celebration of authentic Mexican cuisine, featuring dishes inspired by regional flavors and family recipes. The street tacos were a highlight, offering a selection of fillings such as carnitas, carne asada, and grilled chicken, all served on soft corn tortillas and topped with fresh cilantro and onions. Each bite was a harmonious blend of textures and flavors.

The combination of flavorful dishes, expertly crafted cocktails, and vibrant ambiance made for an unforgettable mid-afternoon dining experience. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to Scottsdale, Barrio Queen is a must-visit destination for those seeking authentic Mexican cuisine in a lively setting and it’s walking distance from Scottsdale mall.
